July - FLOURISHING

In Women Rowing North by Mary Pipher, she suggests that we flourish in life when we realize “everything is workable.” Being workable doesn’t mean pat answers or a sense that everything is wonderful. Workable means we can always find the silver current of resilience that can carry us forward.

Flourishing is about learning, growing, resilience, and thriving in the midst of everything else. It’s about remembering and activating the strengths and qualities that are our special superpowers and help us grow.

In this conversation, remember that growth is not inevitable. We could choose to remain locked in our smallest self, comforted by outdated ideas or values. We could choose to wither emotionally and deal with life’s blows by becoming more isolated and self-involved.

  1. What does flourishing mean to you? In what ways are you flourishing in your life now?

  2. If you were to have a mantra that reminded you of your resilience and other superpowers, what would the mantra be?

  3. Name a time when a terrible circumstance became a new beginning. What did you do?

  4. What is your definition of languishing? Is it okay with you if you’re not firing on all cylinders 100% of the time?

  5. Can you relate to the idea of being locked inside the small self?

  6. When you have felt stuck or reached a dead-end, what or who has helped you move forward?

  7. Has adversity taught you to become more curious and less worried or more worried and less curious?

  8. What are your takeaways from this conversation?
