October - I QUIT!

Quitting is a hot topic. First, we had the Great Pandemic resignation in which 40 million Americans left their jobs for better ones. And now, we’re hearing about ‘Quiet Quitting,’ in which people choose to do less at work. And of course, there are countless books about the benefits of quitting all kinds of things that aren’t good for us.

Yet, many of us grew up thinking quitting meant ‘giving up,’ a bad thing. We learned heroic values such as winners never quit and quitters never win. In this conversation, consider how quitting can free up time and space to try something new.

  1. What are your feelings around quitting? Did you grow up with the message or value that quitting is a bad thing?

  2. When has quitting served to be useful or fruitful for you?

  3. When has quitting been a mistake, such as quitting something that was good for you?

  4. What’s the longest time you’ve lived with an unhappy choice you’ve made? Has persevering ever turned out to be dangerous or damaging to you?

  5. Take an uncertain situation in your life today and create a ‘quit criteria.’  What signals will tell you when your time is done?

  6. Is there a current situation or pursuit in your life that needs an exit clause, such as, “If this does or doesn’t happen, then…?

  7. What ideas do you take away from this conversation?
