November - ACTS OF SERVICE

Acts of Service, the act of doing something for or on behalf of another, is one of the 5 Love Languages. Being of service to others is considered one of the most worthy of spiritual practices.

Women’s Forum members often ask if they should be service-oriented by doing something for others as a group project. Yet, many of you are already serving as volunteers, board members, caregivers, etc. Remember that membership in wForum is also about service -– facilitators serve the best interests of the group, retreats serve to grow the group bond.

In this conversation, we invite you to explore and debate the idea of service. The question about service includes the question of ‘filling your own cup’ so that your acts of service are affirming you, not depleting you.

  1. Share a specific example of an act of service you have provided for someone else? Did this fulfill you or drain you? Why?

  2. We are all asked to do many things. What makes you say yes and what makes you say no?

  3. What did you learn about acts of service in your family of origin?  What values were modeled around service work, volunteering, donating money or blood?

  4. Have you ever signed up as a volunteer to use your gift in service and found that it was not a good fit for you?

  5. In this decade of your life, what type of service is calling to you?

  6. Would a group service project fall in the category of filling your cup or not?

  7. What insight or idea from the discussion will you think more about?
